The organic farming practices in the Ashram campus was started in 1999 - 2000. The following crops have been grown in the Ashram to show case the benefits of Organic farming and traditional farming practices: Paddy, Sugarcane, tapioca, tuberose, Cassandra, jasmine, mango, guava, Lemon and Coconut.

Sugarcane
- Sugarcane cultivation has been practiced in the campus using the 3 techniques of fully organic, fully in-organic and integrated (organic + in-organic). It was found that the yield utilising the Organic farming practice was 62% higher than in-organic and 32% higher than the integrated farm.


Bountiful Yields Through Organic Farming

The sugarcane husk is used for mulching and composted and fed to the land later. Sun-hemp is also grown as an intercrop, harvested and left in the soil to provide binding. The sugarcane factory nearby has started to use the Ashram sugarcane farm as its trial and demonstration field.

Paddy
- in paddy it has been found that by practicing organic methods, the maturity time is less by 12 days than the in-organic method. Its also been found that the yield increases with the organic practices. Currently, the organic paddy is being tried in a large scale in the Ashram.



Organic Kanakkambaram Garden
Kanakambaram flower - with organic farm practices, the flower has a brighter colour, it also has increased the size and weight of the flower - the flower which used to have 22 - 25,000 flowers per kilogram are now at 18 - 22,000 .
